This complaint was regarding a judge’s appointment as Chancellor of a University. The complainant, a retired judge, filed the complaint after seeing a news release about the appointment. The complainant felt that a sitting judge should not have been appointed and, more specifically, that this position should be reserved for a retired judge. The judge appointed as the new Chancellor accepted the role to become a trustee and to attend key institutional events; however, she agreed that she would not participate in fundraising. The complainant felt that this arrangement still presented a conflict of interest.
In a response letter, the newly appointed Chancellor stated that she took the required steps to ensure that her appointment would not conflict with her judicial office.
This case was reviewed, and the Council determined that the appropriate limitations agreed upon by officials would limit any associated risks. The matter was closed.Back
