EXPECTED CONDUCT OF JUDGES

We expect a high standard of conduct from our judges, both inside and outside the courtroom. If a judge’s conduct does not meet our expected high standards and is not suitable to be a member of the judiciary, the Canadian Judicial Council has a process for receiving complaints from the public, reviewing the alleged inappropriate conduct and, if necessary, for taking specific measures about a judge.

We expect judges to maintain a high standard of conduct, both inside and outside the courtroom. When someone believes that a judge’s behaviour (not their decision) is of concern, or that a judge is not fit to sit on the Bench, a complaint can be made to the Canadian Judicial Council. In very serious cases, Parliament can remove a judge from office.

In this section, you can learn about the standards of conduct for judges, and how to make a complaint if you believe that a judge has failed to uphold these standards.  You can also find out about Inquiry Committees convened by the Council.  Please use the menu links on the left.
